The Lambert Trophy/Cup (Part II)

Last week, we looked at winners of the long-forgotten Lambert Trophy, awarded to ostensibly the best college football team in the East. This time, we'll check out some winners of the Lambert Cup, which is/was presented to the top Division I-AA/FCS team in the East since 1982. A team from this site's "coverage area" has won the award 26 times, including a three-way tie in 2015.

Today, we'll look at the winners through the 1990s, and profile the champs from 2000 onward next time around.

The Blue Hens lost to Eastern Kentucky in the FCS championship game.

The Crusaders reached the postseason for the first since the 1945 team went to the Orange Bowl.

In just one season, quarterback Ron Ehrhardt set the Rans’ career passing yardage mark.

Rhody’s last NCAA playoff team for 39 years.

The Crusaders’ first season after the tragic death of coach Rick Carter.

Double threat Gordie Lockbaum was third in the Heisman balloting.

The Colonial League (forerunner to today's Patriot League) forbade postseason play, so none of these great late-80s Crusader teams got to play past Thanksgiving.

Head coach Mark Duffner went on to coach Maryland for five seasons and had a long career as an NFL assistant.

The Hens defeated FBS Navy on the road.

The Terriers shut down Kurt Warner and Northern Iowa in the first round of the FCS playoffs. Just four years later, BU shut down the program.

Delaware was one of four teams in the YanCon’s Mid-Atlantic Division to finish in the FCS Top 25.

Delaware lost to McNesse State in the playoffs for the second time in three years.

The Minutemen’s first national title in any sport.
